Does anyone reply in this forum apart from Pavel then?

So PAVEL HAVE A LOOK AT THIS!!!

Image

[:o]

There it is boys and girls, its a Vauxhall Xe ;)

bought a bellhousing as i have already said in this thread from Squires for £160, bought the motor from a scrapper for £150 with all the bits..

I cut the bulkhead out last saturday, what a funny time that was, " i hope to feck this fits now!" I havnt any pics of hte bulkhead being cut or being welded, just after shots...

Image

Image

3" deep the cut out is...

But tonight i had quite a productive night...

I made some plates to pick up off the original xe mounting points.

Image

Image

it was from there i was going to make engine mounts, but fortunatly, i didnt have to do much else!

Image

To BOTH plates, Lada engine mounts could be welded and that was the engine mounted!!! Awesome!

Welded mounts ;)

Image

For some reason teh gear box was further forward now, so i had to redrill the mounts in the floor, only 5 mm so i now have elongated holes as they are m8 bolts :(

For a minute there was a big pannic as the starter would not fit it was into the steering box, but after a little grinding on the steering box, the starter fitted ;) I have no pics with the starter fitted but, this is the cut box in bad pic!

Image

So, engine mounted, i tired the injection system on, and that fitted so the next main big part to do is the exhaust manifold...

The Cav one was nice, its a tubular one all the way threw! THe only real parts that let it down are the Y pieces... As i have limited space due tot he steering box, there is no way a manifold from a mkii escort would do, so its the cav one ill use...

Firstly i cut the pipes off the flange,

Image

I ended up cutting them down to about 2", and tried to point them in the right direction. On the cav it goes straight down, and the Y pieces are low down, i needed slightly pointing back and Y pieces high up to clear my cross member.

I know how important it is to have tuned length manifolds, and i understnad that the cav manifold isnt the best compared to what jjanbspeed can do, BUT im nto janspeed...

THis is how far i got tonight...

Image

1/2 was down the block, not looking too bad i think, but each pipe is a different length. Itll get the car running and work ok i think....

Tomorrow, i hope to get the down part done, but i think its going to have a cross over piece, the Xe exhaust is on the n/s when RWD, but o/s on the Lada!

To be continued....

Well, i havnt posted some work i did the other day, so;

Image

This is the exhaust manifold before welding

Image

After welding

Image

And after fitment to the engine...

THe pipe only goes into the "Y" piece, it dosnt go under the engine yet, i want to get everything on the car first, just incase something dosnt fit properly.

Image

Engine out, and here is my hole ;)

I thought i had taken pics of the hole while its red, but i dont seem to have.

Now one problem has been that the Lada is on hydrolic clutch, and the conversion is set up for cable! Also, now the injection is to be fitted, there is no room for the clutch master cylinder, so to cable we went!

BTW, this is totaly untested!

Image

This is the top of the Lada clutch pedal, 40x60x6mm plate welded to the top. You can see where the old master cylinder mounted on that pin below the piviot point, so now the cable pulls so the plate is above the piviot point.

This was then drilled to 17/64, a m6x40 cap head bolted threw on a plain nut, then the cable is fitted and a nylock was fitted. Wasnt happy the nylock would stay there so i put a split pin threw it!!!

Image

As said, thats the top of the pedal there showing the cable fitted...

Then the bolkhead was drilled out, and a thick washer was welded on. I think this should be well strong enough...

Image

You can see how much higher the cable is there as you can see the old master cylinder hole. This will be covered with a little ally plate.

Then we looked at the clutch again, Dai said that the clutch he had used in the chevette was either mondeo 1800 or TD. Went to GS escorts just around the corner from my mates garage, and asked what they are going to be using in their escort estate car...

Graham " erm, well, we havnt got that far yet!!!"

I said what Dai had used and G said to me that in the back was a turbo diesel escort motor with the box, and if i wanted the clutch plate, i could have it! So 20 mins later, got the box off and there was what looked like a brand new clutch!!!

I got that and as it was cheep!! i bought a new RS2000 clutch arm for £35 which i thought was nice!

Back to the garage, clutch was 10mm to big!!! feck...

clutch arm was sticking too.. :(

So, basicaly, i went home and found a clutch from a sierra i had in the bushes in the front garden!!! That fits really well, so its going in!

The clutch arm was sorted by drilling the hole in the bell housing bigger so it moved the piviot point over and by using a M8 bolt and some nuts washers for the piviot.... Either i have done something wrong, or i have found out why the bell housings are so cheep!!!

So, then we looked at the sump,

Image

from some good advice i was given on the technical forum, i got the sump, made a template for the top of the bubble...

Image

Can you guess what i cut it out with?

anyway. Then made a plate to match, cut a hole in it to sink some tube in to shroud the pick up pipe, and welded it all together...

Image

Looking in there you can see on the tube we put cut outs every 1/4 around the bottom of the tube.

So, sump is all done....

Or is it?

Is it feck!!!!

Said to my mate that some of the rust looked a bit bad on it, and sugested i left it over night with some oil in see if it leaked out... He said not to bother, just as i spotted a little hole!

10 mins later, using a flat blade screw driver, i found 10-12 holes caused of rust!

Shite!

SO, tomorrow is sort the sump out. Im either going to make a new sump using the top 10mm of the old one , or try to fix what we have....

To be continued! ....

Here is some more!!!!

So the sump was fecked as it was full of holes, so i made one!

Image

Cut the sump all the way around leaving 1" down...

Image

Folded a sheet up and with a few cuts and welds.... :

Image

THe abortion of a sump was made!!!

Looks really bad really but it gives better clearence around the cross member, and takes a little bit more oil!

Image

The box with the bell housing on it, just thought i would show you that!

Image

Cut the back off the air box, my mate bonded a piece to seal the hole up, needs pipe to the idle valve putting in...

Image

Put the starter on, found that it hit inside of the bell housing! Not that good a casting maybe i dont know, but with an air belt sander, it fits. The lada wiring was then used for the alti and starter, untested but should work fine.

Image

this is where the clutch cable comes threw the bulk head to the pedal, as i posted about the other day, cable fitted, it was found to be too long, so i cut it and used cable clamps from B&Q to join it back together!

Now the nightmare of the wiring will continue tomor

i forgot to post some

so...

A little more for you

Image

Coil pack mounted by the top water hose.... Its on the original bracket that mounts around the head with the angle part cut off [ you will know what i mean when you see one ] The leads dont normaly come out here, they come out the back, but i cut a slot in the cover and put them out the side... I had to use a Omega plug lead for no.4 as the original one was too short...

Also in that pic you can see the top hose with out the clips, i made the black metal pipe, and used the samco i had from the Lada engine...

Image

I had some fuel lines made, i have seen people use the standard flexi pipes, and put copper into them and clip them on, but these two pipes that run the whole length of the car with the ends put on them cost me £20 from manflex in warrington!!! ;) The only joint then are in teh boot or in the engine bay, so no fuel smell i hope!!!

Image

Here they are conected to the inlet...

Image

And that is the swirl pot and 2 pumps. One low pressure to feed the swirl pot, a high pressure one from a 2.8 capri out of the swirl pot, that then sends fuel to the inlet, and there is a return back to the swirl pot. There is a vent on the top too, that just loops around and goes out of the car.

here is more update!

Image

Oil pipes done, oil cooler mounted as is the remote filter! Cant use the standard filter mounting as it would send the canister into the anti roll bars!

Now if you know about Xe, there is a problem with the bottom hose, as in when it goes RWD there isnt anything available to my knollage to pipe it up. The standard XE has a plastic manifold pipe that takes from the bottom port on the rad, has a return to the header tank, has a pipe for the heater. Also there is a pipe for the inlet manifold too. This all goes around the back of the block and is useless to me!

So, we made this!

Image

Image

from the back of the water pump, i have a 90, this manifold, then a 90 to the bottom hose. The pipe with the take off, that goes up to the inlet, and the little port takes water to the heater...

Well, the little port would do if i had a heater for the car!!!!

Now, i have just sent a pipe from there threw the bulkhead, where it will loop back to the port on the back of the Xe head....

Image

As you can see, i put a BIG rubber gromet over the port out of the head to alow for engine movement, and osme access to the pipe clip!

Now, also, i finished fastening the fuel pipes up in the car, i measured them too big and knew i had to put a loop under the back seat, this way, knowing they were a little too long, is better than maybe them being too short!!! So clipped that up, and ran some 44's twin core to power each pump up, these will goto seperate relays, these will be switched by the main vauxhall fuel relay...

Image

You also can see that the handbrake cables where moved in the car some time ago....

Image

Thats the dash to be put back together, i cant wait honest!!!!

Image

Some more dash on the parcel shelf....

Image

What do you think of this then?

Its the standard air box cut down, my mate mark did it for me, and he bonded on a piece of Punto bumper to the side [ not dosnt have to be punto LOL! ] and put the breather port on too! Looks really awesome i think!

Image

Thats the side with the port, it took about 1 hour to do!

so what do you think so far?!

from saturday

well, here is a little more

the engine was running, but all the biuts inside of the car where just in tempory so i could try it.

I had to fit a heater, so i got one from a mini... THe pipes on the xe to the heater are 22mm, while ont he mini they are more like 16mm, so i went to B&Q and made some adapters!

Image

They are preloaded with solder, all you need is some flux! We put them onto some straight copper pipe, and flaided the end with a tapered bar that we hit into the end with a hammer!!!

Image

Here you can see the heater standing up! it was teh best way to fit it, even though its hard to get to the control, and even harder tomorrow when i get the center dash made!

You can also see that i have mounted the brain behind the glove box lid, so its easy to get to!

I moved the 3 dails to where the heater control was, and have made a little pannel for them to sit in...

Also moved the relays to where the ash tray was. The relay holder is exactly theright size for the hole!

Image

Here you can see the adapters in position, i used these large grommets to take the pipes threw the bulkhead.

Image

Not a very good pic, but one of the oil cooler pipes was leeking it was a vaux one with an adapter pushed into it, so i went to manflex in warrington adn they redid the pipes for me! I turned the oil filter housing around too, the pipes fitted better!

So, little jobs for tomorrow and then its almost done!

I just hope it is as fast as this little bugger

Image

my mates dog, it goes like feck aroudn the

and today!

From this....

to this!

Image

No oil leeks now, and all seems ok but the ecu light is on and its flashing error 19, and its reving quite a bit, so ill have to check it out tomorrow, 19 is something to do with the crank sensor signal...

Hmm, the car dosnt seem to want to handle properly now, so i changed the washers in the front wish bone... Put as many as i could in the rear bolt on the crossmember, and non in the front, but the car still wants to understeer...

how do you set the car up corectly?

The steering now is heavier, so i have started to fit powersteering ;)
