LOL! i knew you would post LOL!

As if i could leave this forum!

here she is!

Image

Its a 1997-8 [ not sure as yet ] BMW compact, it was bought for £400 from a local damaged repairable salvage yard. I dont know how it woks in Hu, but a catagory D write off, is minimal damage, its not logged with the dvla as a write off, cat c is damaged and logged with the dvla as a write off, cat b is seriously damaged but repairable, and cat a is salvage only.

this is a cat c car, only back pannel, rear bumper, exhaust, and a pull on the back was needed!

Car is repaired now, cost me £200. Car is worth a lot more, most likely £1500-2000!!!!

But as its going to be a rally car, it got stripped and bits added

Image

thats my mate trying on the bumper after the pannel was replaced...

Image

No trim, that was hard to get out!

Image

Then rear diff removed and an alpina e30 one was bought

Image

Old one on the left new one on the right!

I fitted e30 drive shafts as they are stronger, but more common, so if i have a problem at a rally then most likey someone will have a e30 one not a e36 compact...

Image

Here is e36 m3 anti roll bar, e30 bottom arms, e36 m3 bottom wish bone bushes, they add castor.

Image

you can see the difference here!

Image

ANd them fitted

For the rear shocks i have fitted escort grp 4 ones, they are the same length etc.

Image

Fit in teh bmw top mounts, but they are rubbish so ill goto escort mounts like lada fronts.

Image

I used the bmw tubes on the rubber, the ford ones are slightly difference in size.
I fitted bmw ti rear springs also

front

Image

these are billstein front struts, and inserts, the motorsport ones not fast road!

These have been fitted with 325i springs, i recon the 6 pot engine is that much heavier that these springs and the 4 pot motor will be about right to start off with.

also i have e36 m3 top mounts they move the top of the strut back and in adding camber and castor more!!!!

Also in the pic you can see the aeroquip ill be fitting to the car ;)

so that is it so far!

I have been rebuilding my 125 kart for a testing session, so no progress for a bit.Ill keep you updated ;)

Been playing again today.

Made myself a hydrolic handbrake!

I decided i wanted one that will look standard and sit next to the original one, so i would have 2 handbrakes. I also didnt want the handbrake to be too big, or be too obvious inside of the car, i dont like it when you cna see the cylider and pipework etc.

anyway

I had this

Image

Its just a normal cheepo cylinder mount, its designed to take teh cylinder and be close to the original handbrake so you can put a pip onto it and have a 2 in one design.

But i did it differently as i was a bit short on room as i want it to sit inside the standard center console.

Image

This is the standard handbrake lever out of another bmw. I cut the bottom off it where the cables usualy mounts, removed all the inside of it, the mount and buttom etc. Then i welded a tube into the old piviot point.

Image

you can see it slightly better on this pic, the tube is the one on the right. Now this is the width of the mount, so i c an put a bar all the way threw it to mount it.

Image

Here i have mounted the cylider the wrong way around, cut the push bar down, and welded the U part on to take a clevis pin. This is a part off a truck, i dont know what truck etc, i was just given it ;)

Image

Now i asembled it, and drilled the lever to take the cylinder! I put a tube into where the clevis pin goes to make it stronger.

Image

If i mess about a bit, i can get the original boot to cover the mechanical parts, and get the plastic center console to cover the cylinder i hope!

To be fitted tomorrow hopefully and see how it look! ;)

Right, here is a few pics of whats happened this week so far!

Monday..

Image

Feck, its been so cold, my mates garage has old style concertina doors, and the wind just howls threw even with them closed! No heat, and didnt help the early start on monday due to it being too cold sunday night to paint this...

Image

Anyway.

Started to finish off welding the cage in, i was using Co2 shielding gas, and i didnt like it, some of the welds look very big i think, but they are done.

Image

As you can just see the cage i built it up on boxes, so it was a good fit to the roof and to the pillars, one day i may weld tabs on here and there, but for now i want to get the car ready to use...

Image

Looks ugly welding, but it is strong.

Image

from behind!

I also started to fit the OMP seats i was given, but i put the rails in for the drivers side, put bolts sticking up out of 1"x1"x3mm box, then decided the seats were shite, then phoned Magnum motorsport up, and ordered 2 new seats. Not exactly sure of the price yet, i think they are £125 ea.

Image

Here you can see the Escort Grp4 billstein the Ti rear spring, and the aeroquip i fitted tuesday [ i think it was ]

This then goes into the car and T's forward into this!!!

Image

Here we have my home made hydrolic handbrake, and willwood bias valve!

Bit worried the handbrake wont work properly, its fitted 0.7 cylinder, not a 6.25 but as i have it, and no smaller one, then ill try it first!

Image

New factory back box as the old one had takes some damage in the accident, this is a cat c write off...

Image

Standard strut top

Image

BMW M3 strut top !!! look at how far back the top of the strut is now! I fitted them to the oposite sides than they are made for, as i have been told this is better as you get a little more camber and castor.

One thing is though, with standard size springs the strut tops hit the inside of the turret when on full lock. I hope this isnt a problem.

Image

Aeroquiped!

Image

Wheel back on!

That is basicaly it so far this week, hopefully get my seats tomorrow, but not sure how much work will be done as its my birthday and we are having a bbq!!!!

Well done a bit more, and i have to do a bit more very quickly!

The car needs a msa logbook, that makes it elagable for stage rallying in the uk, there are certain key changes in the rules that come in next year. I really need to get my car logbooked before the end of this year, which means a slight change of plan to what gets done now and left for later!

Anyway

Image

I put this little bit of 50x25mm box on the top of the tunnel just infront of the back seat area and tacked it on.

Image

i then welded this bar across the main hoop legs, and welded it to the box on the tunnel. This should give much more protection in the case of a side impact!

The two tabs you can see, these i welded on so i could mount my plumbed in fire extinguisher. This feeds a 6mm ally tube that goes into the engine bay, this feeds 2 outlet nozzles that point at the exhaust manifold and fuel system.

Image

Fire extinguisher here fitted. There is a red wire to it, this is a pull cord to a handle that goes on the scuttle pannel just below the windscreen.

The seat mount in the drivers side i posted in my last post, i wasnt happy with them so i cut them out and put new ones in, then i tried my new Magnum motorsport seat! ;) Very comfortable!

I put the harnesses inso i can guess where to weld the eyelets on.

Im going to weld a bar between the rear down legs to mount the shoulder straps onto to. That is tomorrows job!

I havnt taken any pics, but i have mounted the pull cables on the bulkhead, i have put the fuel lines in, and a few other small jobs are sorted!

Just need to paint the car now, put the lights etc back into her, and put it back on 4 wheels to get the logbook done.

fingers crossed.

More pics tomorrow i hope!

here we go, im sure there is more i have done wrong here, so here goes!!!!

Image

There is the divers seat munted, and the harness in so i can work out where to put the eyelets!

Havnt done the passengers side yet!

Image

Old standard top mount for the rear shockers

Image

New top mount

Image

New top mount fitted with to the escort grp 4 shock.

Image

Im sure someone will have something to say about this! I Put a bar in for the harnesses, but that meant moving the diagonal up a bit. I used the diagonal bar to bo between the legs, and made a new diagonal bar.

Image

You can just see the extinguisher nozzles, does this look ok? Its quite close to the fuel and exhaust systems, i think closer than on top of the strut tops.

Image

Im sure someone will comment about this also...

Image

I think you can pull them ok, i think that is the best place for them, I dont know where anyone else has put theirs. Only thing is the water from the wipers will go straight onto them so ill grease them up really good ;)

When he got here at 2:30!!! the car was quite dry ;)

Still there is a lot of work to be done, and there is some good recommendations that i was given too as for positioning things etc.

So tomorrow work will carry on!

I got my tank guards back from magnum yesterday

Image

When dave said £80 i thought that was a lot until i got them, they are 10mm thick, and cover all of the tank. Fitted them today, all i had to do was use longer bolts on the straps and that was it!

Fitted these also...

Image

They are the black polly bushes i got from HERE

Powerflex, they fitted into the beam so easy it was unreal, but getting the old ones out took 30 mins a side and that was with an air chizel and blow tourch!

Beam back on tomorrow i hope, got to take a motor out of a car for a mate int eh morning first though [:^(]

i dont know if anyone is really interested but my bmw has come to a hault atm because of my mothers mini amungst other reasons.

My mother bought this can new in 1989, and she loves it, why i dont know!!!

So, i thought i would post about that while it could be of use to someone reading...

Firstly its had 2 sills, 1/2 a o/s floor pan, 1/2 inner sill both sides...

Now it needs and is getting;

Image

Thats the front shocker mount, rotten behind the mount, that should be solid plate there! So ill have to do something about that.

Image

With the wing cut off, it was easier to get to, but my mate wanted to get the wing on and sort the front pannel out.

Image

We put the new scuttle pannel ontop of the old one, tried the wing on, and made a desision on the front pannel, we have 1/4 peice for the o/s it was do we put it all in or just the bit at the top where it was rotten. We went for it all in the end!

Image

Everything almost lined up so the scuttle piece, it was tek screwed into place, then we used an air saw to cut the two pannels as the same time so they fitted perfectly as a but joint. This was then welded in and belt sanded off.

Image

The wing was then put on, we drilled it and plug welded it down the inner wing. We tried the bonnet first though!

Image

There is 1/4 front pannel in, instead of cutting all teh old one off and but jointing it on, we vut it just over 1" too bit, knocked int he old pannel, and put the new one on top. Seam welded the outside, and then stitched the overlap on the inside. That should make it stronger, not neater. If we were to do it properly, we would have put a full front pannel in, but they are £60+vat, and we have limited time to do it also.

Image

Side View.

So just need to tidy it up a bit, and seal the bits under the front.

THe other side wants a wing and an A pannel, and where the heater vent is in the dash, there is a big hole also!

Image

Int hat pic, you see the n/s, the ick plate is the part that is shiny on the right with the door off, then you see the pillar with two holes in it where the door bolts on, and that hole is where the vent goes, the cut edge is where i roughly cut off the scuttle pannel so i can get into weld the vent hole easier...

So, that is why i havnt been doing much with the bmw [;)]

Oh, and one mroe thing, this is a transit tipper my mate is painting for a local lad now...

READ TEH REG !!!

thanks mate! Here is what i did today!

Image

DOnt know why that is side on pic, but anyway, i had to get a hinge pannel repair piece as there was more and more holes appearing. You can see also, that this does not cover all the holes, and also in the middle of the rot goes an air vent [:[]

Image

So, lined the door up, tacked the hinge pannel in, then made that other plate that goes right upto the inner wing! Then welded it in, and used a belt sander to make the hole for the vent. The vent was then tiger sealed in. I recon this is why the rot is there in the first place.

Image

New scuttle end plate tacked into place. Fortunatly when removing this side i didnt slip with the drill and put a hole in the dash!!! We had positioned the pannel when we put the door on, and tried fitting the wing.

Image

Everything cleaned up!

Image

New wing, A pannel, and scuttle welded in!

Image

Image

Image

For some reason in that pic it looks rusty but it isnt!

So more to do tomorrow with my bad eyes!

Keep on it! I'm waiting for the pics. :)
Is it a tuned car, or only a factory type?

By the way, can you buy from ebay?

Thanks, Greet, HegeGabi.

the car has a 1275cc motor from a MG metro, goes ok but moden cars are so much quicker now. Its 73bhp and the old cooper s cars where 75, that is just nothing but was a serious motor in their day!

Anyway more today

More more more more more more more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Been poking...

Image

Fuel tank out

Image

Car in 2 post ramp

Image

car lifted up and some bolts removed.

Image

Subframe off, only took 20 mins to get it off!!!

Image

N/s subframe mount... WHERE????? [:[]

Image

O/s subframe mount, just about there...

Image

O/s rear closing plate on rear valance, or whats left of it..

Image

n/s closing plate...

[:^(]

Got stuck into the n/s subframe mount though...

Image

Cut all the rot out, and started to clean it up. I had to stop early and goto the hospital to get my eye checked out again, fortunatly its ok, much better than my mothers mini anyway!

Back in work tomorrow so no progress tomorrow i expect..

Right was at work today so i didnt have much time to do anything, was only there for an hour...

Image

Stripped the paint on the quarter pannel and it revieled a plate someone has welded in there before, a few years agot he car went to a local garage to have all this work done, looks like they jsut toom my mothers money and ran, as this plate is rotten, it was not painted on the back...

So..

Image

Air haksaw that bit out too!

Image

Now looking at it with the clean edges it dosnt look that big of a problem does it? The main thing i have to do now is get everything near to where i want it to be, and then put the rear subframe back on to make sure the bolt holes line up...

There is one other little problem, inside of the car at the bottom left on that last pic, there is a little pannel inside of the car, im not sure how to repair this yet, maybe from inside of the car threw the rear bin....

hmm... Oh well...

So i was not going to post any more about the mini as its not a rally car, however as i seem to be getting a lot of stick about why my car is not finished, some more pics!

Image

thats inside of the boot, O/S rear of the back pannel rotten, what i didnt know then is how much!

Image

Into the boot all along almost, so it wanted 1/2 a boot floor, and most of the back pannel, so i got cutting bits out as in teh pic and cleaning it up..

Image

Rear valance although good, came off, and also the closing plate i had welded in off too, it was to the only good bits of boot it apears!! I thought it wasnt rotten i was fooled!!!

Image

I then cut a sheet the side of the back and some more, and tacked it inplace.

Image

Tac tac tac ;)

Image

tac tac tac ;)

Image

Then i cut some plates to make up the back pannel, i thought it would be hard to do it in one, so i did it in 3.

Tac tac tac ;)))

Image

Weld weld weld

Image

weld weld weld..

Image

same underneath..

weld weld weld ;))))))))

So not it want the new boot floor shaping properly, the valance welding back on, and the quarter plates too...

About the bmw, i bought this..

Why do you need a C20XE for the BMW? Wouldn't be easier to use a BMW engine? I can't understand it.

I bought a 1600 bmw motor last weekend for the head as the one on my motor has cracked.

So, i went to collect the motor with my mate, and we struggled to lift it into the boot of my vectra!

We have picked up loads of motors in our times, i can pick up a 4age by myself, lada motr only just about, ford pinto takes 2 people, and the bmw motor only just with 2 people, thats the 4 cylinder one!!!

The c20xe is a lot lot lighter, i recon i could pick one up on my own just about!!!

So, its weight, some people here are saying that the c20xe is lighter, more powerful as standard, loads of tuning bits cheeper!!!

So, even though its a different motor it dosnt matter as i put it to the lada and that was a MUCH harder job!

i recon i have having it running in 10 hours!!!

So went to do a bit more today...

Image

What was a perfectly innocent looking spare wheel well turned out to have loads of little holes in it!

So,

Image

Image

Out came the air saw, and a big hole was made! I took teh rusty bit, marked around it but slightly bigger onto a sheet of steel, and cut it out with the electric sheers!

Image

Welded it outside

and inside too...

Image

you cant really see inside, the car was up in the air then, and i just pointed and guessed witht he camera.

Image

Started work on teh subframe mounts again, i put that big plate in that is vertical, ill cut down teh subframe repair plates, i just think itll be easier...

... well, not that anything is ever easy with a mini!

Bit more done if you wish to have a look!

Image

The bit i didnt want to do!!!

I atached the rear subframe to the repair pannel, then bolted the subframe on, tacked teh plate into place, and then unbolted the subframe.

You can see above i have started to shape a plate to cover yet another hole LOL!

Image

Home made quarter pannel! Ill explaine how i have done this a bit later on with some pictures.

Image

Pannel welded into place, i put a bit too much heat into it and destorted the quarter pannel a bit, but my mate said he can sort that out easily when we get to the filling stage!

Image

Everything welded up now!!

Image

Plastic arch fits on ok, so job well done i think ;)

Image

So over to the off side. Not as bad looking, but still there is a lot of rot...

Image

Its in the quarter pannel too!

Image

I cleaned everything up, and cut the rot out, i forgot to take pic when it was just cleaned and rot cut out! There i have put the subframe locating pannel on in the same was as i did the other side..

So how i did the quarter pannel repair.

Image

First of all, all the rot was taken out, metal cleaned up, and a plate was bent to havea 90deg return [or lip] on the bottom of it, and then the pannel was cut roughly to size.

It was then tacked into place, and i put the arch on and marked arround where the lip wanted to be..

Image

Now using a pair of pliers i started to bend the metal up little by little maybe i made 5 passes following the line...

As you can see the metal has bunched up in places, but i am not worried about this...

Image

Now, i used a hammer and a dolly to knock it into shape more, squashing the metal out and making the lip.

I thought i had taken a pic of the finished lip, but i must not have, ill take one tomorrow and show how i then got rid of the metal where it bunched up.

For some reason the other side didnt bunch up like that maybe as the lip was a little bit shorter to start with, or maybe i folded it better, not sure.
But, more work will be done tomorrow i think instead of going to the prom.

So, just this o/s subframe mount to finish, hole in n/s floor, o/s/f shocker mount to do, rack boot, and yes, shit loads of filler !! LOL!

News on the mini and compact front!

Mini is still waiting paint, i finish work Friday, weeks lay off, and then its all holiday until January! So my mate is in next week, and he said that he will paint the mini, so im going to myther the life out of him until he paints it.

Then when that is done, he can paint the BMW!!!

I fitted a m42 motor to it, and to be fair to bmw, they are one hell of a car designer. Everything has just bolted in, loom on one big multi plug, and off you go! Really impressed, even things like it has a direct 5th, it has big brakes that come off the bigger engined cars in the 3 series family, LSD from the family, its all there and its all in scrap yards.

So, the motor, it isnt running 100% yet, its got a sticking hydrolic tappet, so its missing, first it was really bad, and now its not so bad, i think i have 75% power.

I cant wait to get it out on the lanes, this is going to be one hell of a car!

Dont laugh, its not finished yet but

Image

this is my new gear stick! When i say new, its the old one with the plastic ball moved to make it into a quick shift, and then i extended the lever a bit, not sure weather to leave it this long or not.

Image

The m42 motor i have just installed, its awesome, the tappets where sticking at first, but now all is ok!

Did a bit of " testing " the other day, to see if the handbrake worked, the diff worked, and just general fun!

Avto testing - click here!!!

Image

Moved the piviot point of the ball up, really it wants another ball now, but it willd o for a while. I removed the original rubber to the knob part of the stick and pinned a tube on to take the knob that is now bonded on!

Image

What happens when you " test "

Today went with some tidying up in the garage, and my mate finally doing some te the mini!

Image

I dont know how he knows what he is doing as he isnt looking at what he is doing and has no pupils in his eyes also!

Image

Filler nearly done, just some pinholes to sort out.

Image

" ginger " who we made cover his hair for this pic [:D] then started to mask the car for priming the repairs.

Image

Funny, in those pics, it looks like mike is priming the car in the shop with no mask on, but i remember it being in the booth and mike wearing a full air fed mask and paint suit.

strange

but the primer will be rubbed tomorrow and then into the booth, erm, i mean it has to come out first ofcause!

Looking forward to getting the car done, then the bmw can get in there for paint! [:Y:]

Image

Mark in that pic is the lad who looks like he is doing something on the car LOL! as if!

So, the car was masked up and all sorted for action with the spray gun until we went to mask the drivers door and found

Image

dosnt look much but its a bit of rot we found when removing the door seal.

best sort that before paint!

So now the car is in the booth, ill weld it tuesday while mark repairs a truck. Im sure im being conned some how into babysitting someone who has to work over christmas otherwise on his own...

More progress!

but on the mini...

Image

The rot was cut out, and a plate was made, all edges cleaned up.

Image

Tacked into place

Image

Welded all the way around.

Image

Not my neatest welding, but its well stuck ;)

Image

Then attacked the welds with a belt sander, knocked the plate down a bit.

Image

Filled over the top, and then sanded it down, had to do 2 skims, and it was right!

Image

Car now masked up and pannel wiped

Image

Where the wings meet the scuttle and the front pannel, the gaps were sealed with tiger seal.

Image

No gas in the booth, so we used the space heater to get everything hot.

Image

First a coat of primer on the bits that where bare.

Image

Image

Then some base coat,

Image

More base coat, that was nibbed off in places, and more base applied...

Image

lacquered...

So thats the shell, door and bonnet painted, boot tomorrow as i found more rot ! Just sandblasted it and put some chop strand in it.

So itll be getting built up tomorrow hopefully and mot monday.

Fortunately the mini is nearly there, and i mean nearly!

Image

Looks dirty as it lives in my mates workshop and there is loads of filler dust in the air all the time. Itll just wash straight off so not a problem!

Just missing 3 arches, 1 had a crack in it, 1 needed modding, and the other one Ginge knocked off the table when he painted it! [XXX]

Image

No boot lid as there was a repair on it, and the primer is showing threw, its all ready and prepped, will be painted thursday, and on friday!

CAR IS GOING FOR MOT SATURDAY!!!

So, finally, i can get on with the BMW!

Car is now not painted...

Well, what has happened is that mark painted the first coat on and some reaction happened and loads of silicones appeared in the paint. So, its a rub down tomorrow and then he will paint it hopefully!
